Million Hoodies Movement for Justice Announces Opposition to Trump Dismantling of DACA

August 25th, 2017

Today, Million Hoodies Movement for Justice announced its staunch opposition to the Trump administration’s consideration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) as it puts nearly one million young people of color, striving for their dreams, at risk for deportation. Also, Temporary Protective Status (TPS) is up for renewal and would provide extended stability for over 50,000 immigrants as well. Under the current administration, both these programs are under extreme threat of ending. The move would tear families apart, stifle America’s ability to draw from one of its deepest resources of talent and innovation- diversity, and confirm that communities of color are not safe under the current administration.

“Although DACA and TPS are only small steps forward, they have already shown the immense impact such steps can make in our communities. We will continue to fight for Freedom Cities for all, cities where young youth of color of all statuses have stability and the ability to be carefree. These programs are not perfect, but we cannot take steps back in our fight for our communities ,” said Lexi Parra, Bard College Chapter Member and member of National Coordinating Committee. “The current administration is attempting to punish young people of color who have done nothing wrong and were brought to the United States by their parents for a variety of reasons. Those of us that were brought here believe in our communities and are appalled by the current administration’s continuous attempts to harm people based on the color of their skin or where they come from. We staunchly oppose President Trump’s xenophobic agenda, condemn his actions to the highest degree and will continue to fight for justice until freedom for all is won.”

“The administration may want us to live in fear, but we are here to fight like hell for the most marginalized communities,” said Dante Barry, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Million Hoodies Movement for Justice, “If the United States is to ever realize its full potential, our values must be reflective of the nature in which social movements for black lives and immigrant justice are built on today in our fight for human dignity and community transformation.”

DACA is an immigration policy that provides stability and has give access to upward mobility through access to work permits and deferment to possible deportation for nearly one million immigrant youth in this country since 2014.

If President Trump ends DACA or TPS, he will be putting over a million immigrants, many young folks of color, at risk of deportation and effectively ending their chance to achieve their dreams. This threat is proof that this administration is only focused on keeping communities of color and immigrants in fear and letting a white nationalist agenda take priority over the lives of the most marginalized communities within the United States.

Million Hoodies Movement for Justice came from the death of a young Trayvon Martin in March 2012, murdered because his black body was seen as criminal. Today, the organization creates space for young black and brown youth to discover their agency in fighting for a world where they are not inherently criminalized.
